Intel has announced two members of its 8th Generation Core family of processors at a press event, just ahead of the IFA 2018 tradeshow

The U-series and Y-series CPUs, previously code-named Whiskey Lake and Amber Lake, have been specially designed for midrange laptops and lightweight 2-in-1s laptops respectively.
The 8th-gen processor lineup will improve the mobile connectivity and performance of laptops that are expected to be unveiled by Intel’s hardware partner later this week at IFA.
The U-series brings three new CPUs that run at 15 W.
i7-8565U — 1.8 GHz base clock, four cores, eight threads
i5-8265U — 1.6 GHz base clock, four cores, eight threads
i3-8145U — 2.1GHz base clock, two cores, four threads
Whereas the Y-series has been designed for low power usage at TDP of 5W and is less powerful than the U-series above.
i7-8500Y — 1.5 GHz base clock, two cores, four threads
i5-8200Y — 1.3GHz base clock, two cores, four threads
m3-8100Y — 1.1GHz base clock, two cores, four threads
The highlight of these processors is the integration of Gigabit Wi-Fi support (Wireless-AC 160 MHz) that facilitates up to 12 times faster connectivity speeds especially in low-cost, mainstream laptops.
With these CPUs, Intel wants to increase the performance of portable laptops in cheaper, midrange laptops that may not have been able to provide such speed before.
In addition to this, the new Y-series and U-series chips have built-in support for virtual assistants like Cortana and Alexa. We can also expect to better natural inputs like stylus and touch as well that would improve the experience of cheaper laptops.
Hardware makers like Dell, Lenovo, and Asus, are most likely to show off their latest laptops powered by the U-series and Y-series chips at IFA 2018 that will eventually find their way to the market later this fall.
